Intel Core Ultra 7 Series 2: V vs H vs U vs HX

Series 2 is a processor generation, not a single laptop design. The 200V family is Lunar Lake; do not use “Lunar Lake” as a name for every Series 2 processor. Read the full CPU number and suffix before comparing laptops. A Core Ultra 7 155H is Series 1, not Series 2. V models target thin, efficient laptops. H models suit performance-focused portable machines; U models target lower-power everyday and business systems. HX models are intended for higher-power performance laptops. Cooling, power settings, battery size and the graphics chip affect results: the Ultra 7 badge alone does not establish battery life or gaming performance.

Built-in RAM: Core Ultra 7 256V vs 258V vs 266V vs 268V

Core Ultra 200V uses LPDDR5X memory on the processor package. This RAM is fixed at purchase: there are no SO-DIMM slots to add memory later, and replacing an SSD does not increase RAM. The Core Ultra 7 256V and 266V have 16GB; the 258V and 268V have 32GB. Do not generalise this numbering rule to H, U or HX processors. Choose the memory capacity first, then compare the laptop’s display, ports and battery. For substantial multitasking, virtual machines or creative workloads, 32GB offers more headroom than 16GB, but demanding workloads may need more than a 200V system can provide.

Which Core Ultra 7 laptops have upgradeable RAM?

H, U and HX processor names do not guarantee RAM expansion. The laptop manufacturer chooses the memory layout. A machine may have soldered memory, removable SO-DIMM/CSODIMM modules, or a combination. DDR5 in a listing is not proof of an empty memory slot. Lenovo’s ThinkPad T14 Gen 6 Intel documentation provides a useful example: U/H configurations have two DDR5 SO-DIMM/CSODIMM slots, whereas the V configurations use fixed on-package memory. Always check the exact Indian machine-type or part number: similar product names can conceal different motherboards. For a RAM upgrade, confirm the manufacturer-supported capacity, compatible module type and speed, total slots and occupied slots. Two slots with two modules installed may require replacing both modules. Intel’s processor memory limit is not a promise that every laptop supports that capacity.

Fixed storage vs replaceable SSD vs extra SSD slot

RAM and storage are separate upgrade decisions. Fixed RAM does not mean fixed storage. A laptop with a 258V processor can still have a removable M.2 NVMe SSD. Soldered storage: normally not a user upgrade. Buy sufficient capacity at purchase if the service manual confirms this design. One replaceable M.2 slot: you can replace the existing SSD with a compatible larger drive, but cannot keep a second internal SSD in that same slot. Budget for backup, cloning or reinstalling the operating system. Two supported SSD slots: you may be able to add a second drive if a compatible slot is free. Check whether a screw, bracket or thermal pad is supplied. An M.2 Wi-Fi or WWAN slot is not automatically an SSD expansion slot. For example, the Intel Core Ultra XPS 13 9350 manual specifies one M.2 slot supporting a 2230 or 2280 SSD, depending on configuration. Those are alternative drive lengths, not two slots. Check the current Intel model’s manual because Dell has reused model numbers.

Compare exact laptop models, not just the Ultra 7 badge

The ASUS Zenbook S 14 UX5406 Series 2 configuration is documented with a Core Ultra 7 258V and 32GB memory on package. Do not confuse that configuration with every Zenbook 14 UX3405 or a later UX5406 generation. A familiar family name is not enough to identify the processor or upgrade options. For each shortlist entry, record the complete model suffix, CPU number, installed RAM, memory slots, SSD format and free storage slots. Treat merchant listings that mix multiple CPU generations as unresolved until the manufacturer’s specification confirms the exact SKU.

How to buy a laptop with future upgrades in mind

Start with your workload and expected ownership period, then price the complete upgrade path. These are buying guidelines, not universal minimum requirements. 1. Decide your RAM requirement first. For everyday documents and browsing, 16GB may be sufficient. For heavier multitasking and creative work, consider 32GB. If you expect to need 64GB or more, shortlist a model with documented support rather than a fixed 16GB/32GB 200V laptop. 2. Prioritise what cannot be changed easily: processor, graphics, screen and fixed RAM. Do not buy a low-memory V model assuming a future RAM upgrade. 3. Choose storage around your files. A 512GB SSD may suit lighter use; large games, video projects and local datasets can make 1TB or more useful. A cheaper small SSD is a sensible starting point only if the replacement or expansion route is confirmed. 4. Check the service manual before ordering. Verify SO-DIMM versus CSODIMM requirements, maximum supported RAM, M.2 2230/2242/2280 dimensions, NVMe compatibility, drive thickness and thermal clearances. 5. Compare the factory upgrade premium with compatible parts, installation and migration costs. Include the cost of replacing already-installed modules or the original SSD. Confirm the manufacturer’s service and warranty terms for your region. 6. Back up files and retain the device-encryption recovery key before storage work. Follow the manufacturer’s power and battery-disconnection instructions or use a qualified service centre. Before purchase, ask the seller: “For this exact part number, how much RAM is fixed, how many memory slots are occupied, and can I add a second SSD without replacing the first?” Get a specification or service-manual reference rather than a general assurance.
PRO BUYER TIPS
  • Best upgrade strategy: buy enough fixed RAM now; expand storage later only when the manual confirms support.
  • A USB external SSD can add file capacity, but cannot increase system RAM or create a second internal drive slot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I upgrade the RAM in a Core Ultra 7 258V laptop?

No. Its 32GB LPDDR5X memory is on the processor package. The 256V has 16GB, also fixed. Storage upgradeability is a separate laptop-specific question.

Is every Core Ultra 7 H or HX laptop RAM upgradeable?

No. Check the exact model’s memory slots and supported capacity. The processor suffix alone does not establish upgradeability.

Does fixed RAM mean the SSD is fixed too?

No. A laptop with fixed RAM can have a replaceable M.2 SSD. Confirm whether the model has one occupied slot or an additional supported free slot.

Should I buy more RAM or a larger SSD first?

Prioritise sufficient fixed RAM because it cannot be expanded later. A smaller SSD can be upgraded later only if the exact model supports replacement or expansion.
